Why do I grind my teeth or clench my jaw in my sleep?
Grinding or clenching usually isn't a dental problem, though your dentist is often the first to spot it. It's a nervous system discharging the day's tension when there's nowhere else to take it.
The 'release' often happens at night, because that's when your body finally stops holding everything together.
You might wake with a tight jaw or a headache. Often the first response is a night guard, but while that protects your teeth, it only treats the impact of the tension, not the reason it's there in the first place.
We let your dentist look after your teeth. Where we can help is to get curious about what your system has been carrying, and help it learn to release that tension before bedtime rather than in your sleep, so your jaw can simply relax at night.
What happens over our four sessions?
I work within a structured programme of four sessions (usually weekly, where possible) because meaningful change rarely happens in a single appointment. Each session builds on the last, giving your mind and body time to settle, learn and change.
Your first session starts with a conversation. We'll take time to understand what's been happening, what you'd like to be different, and answer any questions you have about the process. I'll then guide you into hypnosis, a calm, inward-focused state, rather like daydreaming, but with a purpose. You remain aware and in control throughout. Many people tell me it's one of the most relaxing experiences they've had in a long time.
Each session is tailored to you and builds on your progress, combining conversation, hypnosis and practical tools where appropriate. You'll also receive personalised audio recordings to listen to between sessions, helping to reinforce the work we're doing together.
What people often notice
Most people come here focusing on their teeth or jaw. What tends to follow reaches further: waking refreshed, noticing a quieter mind, and less overall tension carried through the day.
Is this the right approach for you?
We always advise ruling out any dental or structural cause of your teeth grinding or jaw clenching with your dentist first, before starting hypnotherapy.
Your free consultation is an opportunity for us to understand what's been triggering your symptoms and decide together whether this feels like the right approach for you.
