Drinking less

Why do I always reach for a drink?

Look closely, and that glass of wine in the evening or beer after work is nearly always tied to something else your mind has decided it needs: a reward, a way to take the edge off socially, or simply permission to pause at the end of the day.

Cutting down isn't about forcing yourself to drink less. It's about understanding what the drink has been doing for you.

Willpower alone tends to leave people feeling deprived, because it ignores why the habit existed. Once you know what you really need, you can usually find another, healthier way to get it, and alcohol can go back to being something you enjoy in moderation, rather than something you rely on.

At Belief Dynamics

We don't start by asking you to cut down. We get curious about the moments the drink shows up, what's happening just before, and what it's stepping in to do, so we can work with those patterns and change happens naturally and easily.

What happens over our four sessions?

I work within a structured programme of four sessions (usually weekly, where possible) because meaningful change rarely happens in a single appointment. Each session builds on the last, giving your mind and body time to settle, learn and change.

Your first session starts with a conversation. We'll take time to understand what's been happening, what you'd like to be different, and answer any questions you have about the process. I'll then guide you into hypnosis, a calm, inward-focused state, rather like daydreaming, but with a purpose. You remain aware and in control throughout. Many people tell me it's one of the most relaxing experiences they've had in a long time.

Each session is tailored to you and builds on your progress, combining conversation, hypnosis and practical tools where appropriate. You'll also receive personalised audio recordings to listen to between sessions, helping to reinforce the work we're doing together.

What people often notice

People come wanting to cut down. What tends to follow reaches further: a greater understanding of yourself and your needs, and enjoying the freedom that comes from making better choices.

“I must admit, I didn't expect hypnotherapy to work as it has. I really enjoyed the process, talking about how I felt with Melissa and coming to an understanding of why I was drinking and my reaction to social pressures. I loved the relaxation techniques and still use them when I feel stressed. The results speak for themselves - I am happier, healthier and able to simply say 'No' when offered a drink, without feeling I am missing out. The whole process has been life-changing.”

Is this the right approach for you?

This approach works well for people who want to change their relationship with alcohol by cutting down, breaking a habit, or drinking more in line with how they'd like to. If, however, what you're experiencing feels more like dependence, hypnotherapy can still have a place, but it works best alongside support from your GP or a specialist service or charity such as Resolve.

Your free consultation is a chance to talk through how and when alcohol shows up in your life and decide together whether this feels like the right approach for you.
