Why have I started to avoid driving?
Driving anxiety often starts with a single event, a near miss, seeing an accident, experiencing road rage, or simply one bad day that your nervous system decided to remember. Once your brain connects driving with that vivid experience, it can begin to generalise: motorways, roundabouts, busy junctions, even the thought of driving somewhere unfamiliar can start triggering the same alarm.
You know how to drive. It's your nervous system that has stopped trusting that.
You've probably noticed the anxiety doesn't match up with your actual ability. You may be a perfectly capable, experienced driver who still finds their heart racing at a roundabout, or avoids motorways altogether. That gap between skill and fear is key: this isn't about learning to drive better, it's about a nervous system on high alert every time you get behind the wheel.
We don't begin with driving. We get curious about when and why your nervous system started treating an ordinary drive as an emergency. We come to understand what driving has come to mean, and help your mind and body relearn that the roads you're avoiding aren't actually as dangerous as they now feel.
What happens over our four sessions?
I work within a structured programme of four sessions (usually weekly, where possible) because meaningful change rarely happens in a single appointment. Each session builds on the last, giving your mind and body time to settle, learn and change.
Your first session starts with a conversation. We'll take time to understand what's been happening, what you'd like to be different, and answer any questions you have about the process. I'll then guide you into hypnosis, a calm, inward-focused state, rather like daydreaming, but with a purpose. You remain aware and in control throughout. Many people tell me it's one of the most relaxing experiences they've had in a long time.
Each session is tailored to you and builds on your progress, combining conversation, hypnosis and practical tools where appropriate. You'll also receive personalised audio recordings to listen to between sessions, helping to reinforce the work we're doing together.
What people often notice
People often come hoping to feel less anxious about driving. What tends to follow reaches further: driving becoming ordinary again, specific routes and journeys opening back up, and regaining the independence that driving gives them.
Is this the right approach for you?
