Why can't I just accept the doctor's reassurance and move on?
Health anxiety isn't about being dramatic or wanting attention. It's a specific loop: a bodily sensation gets noticed, the mind jumps to the worst explanation, and checking or seeking reassurance brings brief relief, which teaches the brain to repeat the whole cycle next time a sensation shows up.
The checking is the solution, worn into a well-trodden path.
You've probably noticed that reassurance from your GP, a family member or Dr Google never quite lasts. A clear test result might settle things for a short while, before the doubt creeps back in, or attaches itself to a different symptom entirely. That's not a failure in you, or the reassurance not being good enough. It's the loop doing what loops do, each round strengthening the pattern rather than resolving it.
Where the evidence actually points. Any new or persistent physical symptom should always be properly checked by your GP first. Health anxiety is not a reason to assume a symptom isn't real, and this work only makes sense once medical concerns have been genuinely investigated and ruled out, or are being appropriately managed. The most evidence-based treatment for health anxiety itself is CBT, which works directly with the checking-and-reassurance loop.
We don't start by trying to reassure you about your health, that's not our role. Where hypnotherapy can help is with the nervous system underneath the loop. By working with the heightened state that makes ordinary bodily sensations register as alarming in the first place, a sensation can start being just a sensation again, reducing unnecessary worry and allowing genuine reassurance to actually land.
What happens over our four sessions?
I work within a structured programme of four sessions (usually weekly, where possible) because meaningful change rarely happens in a single appointment. Each session builds on the last, giving your mind and body time to settle, learn and change.
Your first session starts with a conversation. We'll take time to understand what's been happening, what you'd like to be different, and answer any questions you have about the process. I'll then guide you into hypnosis, a calm, inward-focused state, rather like daydreaming, but with a purpose. You remain aware and in control throughout. Many people tell me it's one of the most relaxing experiences they've had in a long time.
Each session is tailored to you and builds on your progress, combining conversation, hypnosis and practical tools where appropriate. You'll also receive personalised audio recordings to listen to between sessions, helping to reinforce the work we're doing together.
What people often notice
People often come exhausted by the cycle of worry and checking. What tends to follow reaches further: noticing a sensation without immediately spiralling, trusting your body again, and reclaiming the time and energy that health anxiety had been absorbing.
Is this the right approach for you?
Hypnotherapy works well once medical concerns have been properly checked and addressed.
Your free consultation is an opportunity for us to understand what's been happening, answer your questions and decide together whether this feels like the right fit for you. If your anxiety is more focused on obsessive checking behaviours specifically, or sits alongside significant depression, it's worth mentioning so we can make sure you're pointed toward the right support.
