IBS & gut health

Why does my gut suffer whenever I'm stressed or anxious?

The gut and the brain are in constant conversation, and it's well established that stress and mood affect the gut, and vice versa.

Your gut isn't overreacting. It may just be listening very closely to a nervous system that's on edge.

Gut symptoms like constipation, pain, or diarrhoea often have more to do with stress than with what you eat. When there's no clear medical cause, it's easy to feel stuck, you've changed your diet, your routine, even your plans, and your gut still isn't settling. The worry about symptoms can end up being just as limiting as the symptoms themselves. Which is why gut-directed hypnotherapy is recommended in NICE guidelines and used within some NHS IBS services.

At Belief Dynamics

We don't assume the gut itself is at fault. We look at the nervous system underneath the symptoms, using gentle gut-directed hypnotherapy principles to calm the signals travelling between brain and gut. Once that two-way communication settles, a healthier balance tends to return.

What happens over our four sessions?

I work within a structured programme of four sessions (usually weekly, where possible) because meaningful change rarely happens in a single appointment. Each session builds on the last, giving your mind and body time to settle, learn and change.

Your first session starts with a conversation. We'll take time to understand what's been happening, what you'd like to be different, and answer any questions you have about the process. I'll then guide you into hypnosis, a calm, inward-focused state, rather like daydreaming, but with a purpose. You remain aware and in control throughout. Many people tell me it's one of the most relaxing experiences they've had in a long time.

Each session is tailored to you and builds on your progress, combining conversation, hypnosis and practical tools where appropriate. You'll also receive personalised audio recordings to listen to between sessions, helping to reinforce the work we're doing together.

With IBS, symptoms are often underpinned by layers of anxiety that have built up over time, so some people need more than four sessions to fully resolve them. We'll always be honest with you about how things are progressing.

What people often notice

People often arrive wanting to reduce the symptoms of IBS. What people experience tends to reach further than that: feeling less anxiety overall, returning to socialising, and letting go of the constant monitoring.

Is this the right approach for you?

IBS can start to shape more than your gut, the meals you avoid, the plans you hesitate to make, the trips you plan around bathroom access. Gut-directed hypnotherapy isn't right for every case, particularly where symptoms haven't yet been medically assessed.

Your free consultation is an opportunity for us to understand what's been triggering your symptoms and decide together whether this feels like the right approach for you.
