Retained primitive reflexes

Why is my child experiencing behavioural, emotional and learning difficulties?

Primitive reflexes are the automatic movement patterns every baby is born with. They help with birth, feeding and early survival, and are meant to integrate, becoming more mature, voluntary movements, within the first year or so of life. When one or more doesn't fully integrate, it can keep firing in the background well beyond infancy, shaping how a child moves, learns, regulates emotion, and responds to everyday stress.

A retained reflex isn't a behaviour choice. It's the nervous system still running code it should have overwritten years ago.

A retained reflex can look like poor coordination, difficulty concentrating, exaggerated startle responses, emotional overwhelm that seems out of proportion, or a child who seems to move through the world constantly braced for danger, even when nothing around them is actually unsafe. Many parents notice their child's reactions don't quite match the situation, not because the child is being difficult, but because part of their nervous system is still responding as if to a much earlier, more primitive kind of threat.

Where the evidence actually points. Assessing for retained primitive reflexes, and physically working to integrate them, is a specialist discipline known as Neuro-Developmental Therapy. It isn't something hypnotherapy does or claims to do; it's the work of a trained reflex integration therapist, using specific movement-based protocols over time. If retained reflexes haven't yet been properly assessed, that's genuinely the right starting point, and I'll always point you there first.

Where hypnotherapy may help. Where hypnotherapy can be useful is alongside that work. By supporting the nervous-system regulation that reflex integration therapy is ultimately working toward, it can help a child's body and mind feel calmer and safer day to day while the underlying physical work is being done. A nervous system that feels less braced tends to be more able to respond to the integration process itself, and better able to cope with everyday learning, emotional regulation and connection in the meantime.

At Belief Dynamics

I can work in collaboration with your specialist reflex integration therapist, so your child receives both the physical reflex work and the nervous-system support that complements it. Sessions are gentle, age-appropriate, and tailored specifically to children and teens, helping settle the alert state underneath the reflex pattern, so your child has more capacity for the rest of the work.

What happens over our four sessions?

I work within a structured programme of four sessions (usually weekly, where possible) because meaningful change rarely happens in a single appointment. Each session builds on the last, giving your mind and body time to settle, learn and change.

Your first session starts with a conversation. We'll take time to understand what's been happening, what you'd like to be different, and answer any questions you have about the process. I'll then guide you into hypnosis, a calm, inward-focused state, rather like daydreaming, but with a purpose. You remain aware and in control throughout. Many people tell me it's one of the most relaxing experiences they've had in a long time.

Each session is tailored to you and builds on your progress, combining conversation, hypnosis and practical tools where appropriate. You'll also receive personalised audio recordings to listen to between sessions, helping to reinforce the work we're doing together.

Is this the right approach for you?

This isn't a substitute for reflex integration assessment and therapy. What we offer is the nervous-system side of the picture, working alongside that assessment and treatment, not instead of it.

Your free consultation is a chance to talk through what's been happening, and make sure your child is pointed toward the right support.
